How to read a check

The numbers at the bottom of a check are, from left to right: the 9-digit routing number, which identifies the bank; your account number; and the check number, which also appears in the top right corner. On some business checks the check number comes first, on the left.

The bottom line, left to right

PartWhat it isHow to spot it
Routing numberIdentifies your bank (ABA routing transit number)Always 9 digits, between two ⑆ symbols
Account numberYour account at that bankUsually 8 to 12 digits, followed by the ⑈ symbol
Check numberThe number of this checkMatches the number in the top right corner

This line is printed in a special magnetic ink font called MICR E-13B, so bank machines can read it. The symbols are part of the font: ⑆ marks the routing number (transit), ⑈ marks the end of the account number (on-us). Read more in MICR check printing.

The rest of the front

  • Top left: the account holder's name and address.
  • Top right: the check number and, on many checks, a fraction like 11-35/1210. That's an older form of the routing information used when the MICR line can't be read.
  • Middle: date, payee ("Pay to the order of"), the amount in numbers and in words.
  • Bottom: memo line on the left, signature on the right, then the MICR line.

Filling these in is covered in how to write a check.

Checking a routing number

A real routing number passes a checksum: multiply the digits by 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1, 3, 7, 1, add the results, and the total must be divisible by 10. CheckWriter.app runs this test when you enter your bank details, so a typo is caught before you print.

Print checks with a correct MICR line. Enter your routing and account number once; CheckWriter.app checks the routing number and prints the bottom line in E-13B on blank check stock.

Questions

Is the routing number the same for every check from my bank?

For the same bank and region, usually yes. Large banks have several routing numbers by state, and wire transfers can use a different one. Use the number on your own checks or in online banking.

Why is the account number on my check longer than in my app?

Some banks add leading zeros or extra digits in the MICR line. For direct deposit, use the account number your bank gives you in online banking.

Which number do I give my employer for direct deposit?

The routing number and the account number. A voided check shows both.
