How to write a check
Write the date, the payee's name after “Pay to the order of”, the amount in numbers in the box and in words on the line below, an optional memo, and sign at the bottom right.
Step by step
- Date (top right): the day you write the check, for example 10/31/2026.
- Pay to the order of: the exact name of the person or business, such as “Riverside Supply Co.”
- Amount box: the amount in numbers, starting right next to the dollar sign: 1,250.00.
- Amount in words: “One thousand two hundred fifty and 00/100”, then draw a line to the word DOLLARS so nothing can be added.
- Memo: optional, for an invoice or account number.
- Signature: sign the way your bank has it on file.

Cents are always written as a fraction of 100. Our check writer fills in the words automatically and pads the line with asterisks.
How to void a check
Write VOID in large letters across the front, without covering the routing and account numbers, and record the check number as void in your check register. Employers and payroll services often ask for a voided check to set up direct deposit; you can also print one with the tool.
Writing checks for your business every week? Print them instead: no handwriting, no math mistakes in the words.

What if the numbers and the words don't match?
Under the Uniform Commercial Code, words prevail over numbers. Printing checks avoids the mismatch entirely.
Can I write a check to “Cash”?
You can, but anyone holding it can cash it. For business payments, always name the payee.
