How to fill out a deposit slip

  1. Date, name and account number. Write the account the money goes into. A wrong digit sends the deposit to the wrong place, so copy it from a check or statement.
  2. Cash. Bills go on the currency line, coins on the coin line.
  3. Checks. List each check on its own line with its amount. Many people write the payer’s name or the check number so they can match the deposit later. If there are more than fit on the front, list the rest on the back and carry the total to the front.
  4. Subtotal. Add cash and checks.
  5. Less cash received. If you want cash back, enter it here and sign the slip. Leave it blank otherwise.
  6. Net deposit. Subtotal minus cash received. This is what lands in the account.

Endorse each check on the back before you hand it over. For a business deposit, “For deposit only” plus the business name and account number is the safest endorsement, because the check can then only be deposited, not cashed.

Can I print my own deposit slips?

Usually, yes. Most branches accept a generic deposit slip or let you use the blank ones at the counter. The slips your bank prints for you have your account number in magnetic ink at the bottom so they post automatically; with a generic slip the teller keys the account number in, which is why it must be clear and correct. Some ATMs and night drop boxes need the bank’s own pre-printed slips or envelopes, so check with your branch before you rely on a printed one there.

If you deposit checks with your phone, you do not need a deposit slip at all; the app records each check.

Deposit slip vs. check register

The deposit slip is the bank’s record of what you brought in. Write the same deposit in your check register on the day you make it, so your running balance includes it while the checks clear.

Paying by check too? Print checks on blank stock from your browser, with the MICR line, and keep a register of every check you write.
