How to void a check
Write VOID in large letters across the front of the check with a blue or black pen, without covering the routing number, account number and check number at the bottom. Then record the check number as void in your check register so the gap in the numbering is explained.
Step by step
- Use a pen, not a pencil or marker that soaks through.
- Write VOID across the payee line, the amount box and the signature line, or once in large letters across the whole check.
- Leave the MICR line at the bottom readable: that's what an employer or payment service needs.
- Don't sign it.
- Record it in your check register: check number, date and "VOID".
What is a voided check for?
A voided check shows your bank's routing number and your account number in a form nobody can cash. Employers, payroll services, landlords and utilities ask for one to set up direct deposit or automatic payments. To learn which number is which, see how to read a check.
No checkbook?
- Most banks let you download a direct deposit form from online banking with both numbers on it.
- A bank letter or a counter check with your account details usually works too.
- Ask whether the employer accepts the numbers typed into their portal instead.
Voiding a check that's already out
Writing VOID only works on a check you still hold. If you mailed the wrong amount or the check is lost, call your bank and place a stop payment on the check number. Banks charge a fee for it, and a written stop payment order on a check usually lasts six months under the UCC, so renew it if needed. For business accounts, positive pay catches checks you didn't issue.

Is it safe to give someone a voided check?
It shows your routing and account numbers, which also appear on every check you write. Only give it to the employer or company that needs it, and use a secure upload rather than plain email when you can.
Should I keep or shred a voided check?
Record it in your register, then keep it with your records or shred it. Don't throw it away whole.
Can I void a check by tearing it up?
Shredding works if you don't need it, but still record the number as void so your register has no unexplained gap.
