How to write a check for 50 cents

Write 0.50 in the amount box and “Zero and 50/100” on the line below it, then draw a line to the word DOLLARS.

Step by step

  1. Date (top right): today’s date, for example 10/31/2026.
  2. Pay to the order of: the exact name of the person or business you are paying.
  3. Amount box: 0.50, written right next to the dollar sign.
  4. Amount in words: Zero and 50/100, then a line to DOLLARS.
  5. Memo: optional, such as an invoice or account number.
  6. Signature: sign the way your bank has it on file.

Tips for this amount

  • Put a zero before the cents. Write 0.50 in the box, never just .50, so nobody can add a number in front.
  • Some people write “Fifty cents only” and cross out DOLLARS. “Zero and 50/100” is clearer and is what CheckWriter prints.
  • Start writing at the far left of each line and draw a line through the empty space to DOLLARS.
  • Words win. If the numbers and the words differ, the bank pays the amount in words (UCC § 3-114).

Skip the handwriting: type the payee and amount, and CheckWriter prints the words and the whole check on blank stock or pre-printed checks.

Questions

How do I write 50 cents in words on a check?

Zero and 50/100. The fraction shows the cents; 00/100 means no cents.

Yes. Both mean zero cents and banks accept either. Some people write xx/100.
